Former Spain and FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique spoke about how socio-owned clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid would struggle with other European giants with the growing influence of Middle-eastern and American superpowers in the game. The defender expressed his concerns over the financial and political influence that these powers might bring to their respective clubs. Whereas, fans own and maintain most of the Spanish clubs.
In a recent interview, Pique talked about his concern over clubs like Barca and Madrid’s future in competition against other top European clubs. He said, “Barcelona and Real Madrid, which are owned by the socios, will find it increasingly difficult to compete in Europe.”
The former Manchester United center-back also hinted at the shifting power structure in the footballing geography. He said, “For a long time we have been waiting for a ‘fair play’ at European level, but for political reasons it does not exist. Now teams like PSG and Man City have a huge advantage for the reasons we already know…” Pique went on to praise the American model of the sporting structure. He believes, in the American model, the clubs act in the sport’s interest and, “they all row in the same direction because they have the same interest.”
The transfers like the ones of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi are a few examples. But unlike these clubs, the socio-owned clubs can’t buy players with such high valuations due to a lack of financial strength. And this is causing an imbalance among the clubs.
