Gerard Pique’s ex- partner Shakira set to approach court in Spain for an alleged £13 million tax scam: Reports

Shakira

The procedures against the music icon Shakira have been granted by a Spanish judge, and she will now stand trial for tax fraud. Since allegations were raised in 2018, the lead singer of Hips Don’t Lie has asserted that she was not residing in Spain at the time of the alleged fraud and has denied all wrongdoing.

The Colombian singer is charged by prosecutors of neglecting to pay 14.5 million euros in taxes on revenue received between 2012 and 2014. Her attorneys claim that the 45-year-old has already paid off all of her debts and an additional three million euros in interest, and she has rejected a bargain with the authorities to avoid going to trial.

What specifically is Shakira charged with?

Even though her official residence was in the Bahamas, Barcelona prosecutors claim that the Grammy winner spent more than half of her time there between 2012 and 2014 and should have paid taxes there. Shakira contends that she did not meet the requirement of spending 183 days in Spain to be deemed a tax resident at the time and that she had legal residency in the Bahamas at the time.

According to her publicist, she is “confident that her innocence will be proven by the end of the judicial process”. Shakira, meanwhile, may be given an eight-year prison term and fined 24 million euros (£20.2 million) if she is found guilty of tax evasion. The trial’s date has not yet been determined.
