The Premier League is famous for its fierce competition and fast pace. Its fans often praise it and make fun of other leagues for being less intense and having the same champions every year. In addition, many consider the EPL the world’s best. But surprisingly, after La Liga’s 12th matchday, Twitter fans were shocked as an unexpected team topped the Spanish league.
With 31 points and the second-highest goal difference in the League, Girona are top of La Liga this season. Their unbelievable start to the season was complemented by an unbeaten start until they met Real Madrid in early October. Moreover, their 29 goals scored is the highest in the league, at least 3 more than the second highest (Atletico Madrid).
Artem Dovbyk leads the goalscoring for Girona, with 6 goals, followed by Yangel Herrera with 4. The surprising start to their season has caught attention on social media.
The fact that a Catalonian club other than FC Barcelona is leading the table has raised eyebrows. It remains to be seen if the club is on a purple patch. However, several fans have already dubbed Girona the ‘Spanish Leicester’.
Fans react to Girona taking 1st ahead of Barcelona and Real Madrid
Fans on Twitter have been buzzing at Girona’s unexpected rise to the top of La Liga. A team that is used to mid-table finishes in previous seasons now have eclipsed the likes of Real Madrid and FC Barcelona in La Liga. Fans are in disbelief and commented, “Still far better than the Premier League,” citing the Manchester City dominance in recent years.
Here are some of the fans’ reactions:
“It’s called competitive,” unlike the Premier League, taking a dig at PL fans. “This Girona side would smoke United,” added a fan. Another said that “La Liga fell off.” A hilarious comment read, “Tebas is cooking up a Girona League title to keep the League entertaining.” However, Girona’s loss against Real Madrid has given hope for Madristas to catch up as the season progresses.
