The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was seen as a last chance to finally decide the debate between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as to which one of them was the greatest of all time (GOAT). Unfortunately, Portugal’s sudden elimination in the quarterfinals put a dent into Ronaldo’s chances of winning the ultimate accolade.

On the other hand, Messi finally achieved the one title that had eluded him for 36 years and granted Argentina their first World Cup triumph since 1986. The GOAT debate is still ongoing between avid supporters of the two footballing icons, but FIFA has given its definitive answer.

FIFA shared a post on Twitter with an image of Messi and captioned “The GOAT debate is settled. The ultimate prize is now part of the collection. The legacy is complete,” Both Portugal and Argentina were highly favored to make it to the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals. Supporters of both teams were hoping for a spectacular showdown to settle the debate of the best footballer of all time.

All seemed to be in place for the dream final until Morocco upset Portugal in the quarterfinals. Argentina then managed to reach the finals under the leadership of Messi who scored twice during the match against France. The game ended in a 3-3 draw and went to a penalty shootout which Argentina won 4-2.
