Japan has proven to be the kryptonite of Germany and Hansi Flick. After a shocking 2-1 defeat in the World Cup opener, 10 months later the Germans have fallen against Japan yet again as the Samurai Blue outclassed Germany by four goals to one.

Germany find themselves in a crisis, with their star keeper Manuel Neuer injured and on a poor run of form. Die Mannschaft is set to host the 2024 Euros in 9 months. Following the embarrassing defeat to Japan on Sunday, Germany Head Coach Hansi Flick has come under pressure, with his position under threat. After the game, Flick talked to the media, making certain bold statements, while defending himself and his team. He said, the defeat was indeed embarrassing and that Germany did not have the “tools” to break down and defeat a defense like that of Japan’s.

Flick added that even though the defeat is ultimately a result of individual errors, they have to ‘wake up’ now and get themselves back up again. Despite such a heavy defeat he assured the fans to remain patient. “I think we are doing that well. Yes, I’m the right coach”, Hansi Flick said.

It is unclear whether Flick will still be in charge of the team come Euros. But before that, Germany has a daunting challenge in front of them as they face France on Wednesday. Les Blues are on stellar form, winning their last 5 matches, while the Germans have had back-to-back defeats. The loss against Japan is indeed a wake-up call for Germany.

Hansi Flick’s Germany was outclassed in spectacular fashion as Japan won 4-1 at the Volkswagen Arena. On the back of a defeat to Colombia in June, Germans were looking to right their wrongs. But a shocking defeat against the Blue Samurais has tainted the progress. This comes after Germany got beaten by the in-form Japanese side in the opener of the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar. A 2-1 defeat then was a statement that the Asian side was not in the tournament for fun.

Now, almost 10 months later nothing seems to have changed. Germany saw their worst dream come true after Japan took an early lead, just 11 minutes into the game. Ter Stegen was beaten at his near post by winger Junya Ito. Germany pulled one back through Leroy Sané who slotted home on a swift counter. However, his goal instantly became a mere consolation.

Ayase Ueda, caught Ter Stegen on the wrong foot to guide the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. Germany crumbled in the ending minutes of the game when Kubo picked Robin Gosens’ pocket to put it on a plate for Asano. An unmarked Tanaka headed home the final nail in the coffin for Germany as the game ended 4-1 for the visitors.
