“He doesn’t understand the game tactically”- Ex-Arsenal player takes a dig at England National team manager after humiliating performance at UEFA Nations League

Stewart Robson and Gareth Southgate

Last summer, some felt that Gareth Southgate should resign from his position as England National Team’s coach since he had led the team as far as he could. It’s hard to avoid thinking that they would be a far better team under the leadership of a more tactically competent manager, a view echoed by Stewart Robson.

The former Arsenal player discredited Southgate’s coaching qualifications while speaking on ESPN.

“He doesn’t understand the game tactically. When things are going wrong, he doesn’t know how to rectify it.

We’ve seen that in the semi-final against Croatia in the 2018 World Cup when it was obvious that their wingbacks were getting forward and putting crosses into the box, he had to stop that and change the system, he didn’t.”

Stewart Robson criticized England’s National team manager

Gareth Southgate

Stewart Robson said: ” Against Italy in the final of the Euros, when they were 1-0 up and should have dominated the game, they sat back and allowed Italy to dominate possession. He got it wrong then. He doesn’t know how to change things when things are going badly. Today, he should have been saying to Foden and Sterling ‘keep spinning in behind”…

”He didn’t change it. He changed it to a back four when they went 1-0 down, but too late.”

”He’s just not a good manager in my view.”

Much of that is hard to argue against. To win games against clubs of comparable calibre, Southgate uses a consistent defensive strategy while hoping for a set-piece goal or a lucky break at the opposite end of the field. He doesn’t seem to have many other options if this doesn’t work.

Despite the unfavourable indicators, he will be hoping that all will come together before the tournament in Qatar. Gareth Southgate, the manager of England, is coming under increasing pressure with the World Cup in Qatar only a few months away.

With their defeat against Italy, the team’s abject performance in 2022 has confirmed its relegation to the UEFA Nations League’s “League B.” The English were terrible in Milan, failing to score from play for the fifth game in a row in the group.
