Human Rights Organizations urge FIFA to throw Iran out of 2022 Qatar World Cup after recent outbreak
Human Rights for Iran and FIFA World Cup 2022
As Iran oppresses women, a human rights organisation has written to FIFA President Gianni Infantino urging him to banish Iran from the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Widespread demonstrations have broken out in Iran and are currently occurring in nations all over the world in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, who was detained by the police after being detained earlier in September for loosely donning her hijab.
To make it more difficult for people to organise protests, the Iranian leadership has responded as it normally does: with force and an internet ban. Since the protests began, at least 83 people have died.
According to sources, Open Stadiums is a group that advocates for the rights of Iranian women, wrote to Infantino saying: “For more than 40 years, Iranian women have been denied their most basic privileges.

They also said “We are no longer allowed to participate in sports, watch games in person, or support our beloved football teams. We have, regretfully, come to the conclusion that all of your public pledges to FIFA to end these egregious human rights breaches were false words and promises.”
”Why would FIFA give the Iranian state and its representatives a global stage while it not only refuses to respect basic human rights and dignities, but is currently torturing and killing its own people? Therefore, we ask FIFA, based on Articles 3 and 4 of its statutes, to immediately expel Iran from the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.”

Hossein Mahini, who previously represented Iran 23 times, has reportedly also been detained due to his support for the protests. Over the past ten years, Open Stadiums has waged a largely unsuccessful fight to allow women to watch football matches in Iran.
A few female supporters were allowed entry to Persepolis’ home leg of the Asian Champions League final in Tehran as a result of Infantino’s persuasion. Since then, there hasn’t been much progress. In March, female fans were denied entry to Iran’s World Cup qualifying match against Lebanon in Mashad, and footage showed them being pepper sprayed outside the stadium.
