“I belong with that group”- When Romelu Lukaku claimed he belonged in the same ‘World Class’ category as Karim Benzema, Luis Suarez, and Harry Kane
Romelu Lukaku
Romelu Lukaku recently made a loan switch back to Inter Milan from Chelsea after a disappointing return to Stamford Bridge last season. Chelsea has smashed their club transfer record to sign Romelu Lukaku for €115 million in 2021.
The Belgian however, did little justice to the enormous price tag. A string of low performances along with falling out with the manager led to the Belgian being reduced to just a bench warmer and eventually pushing for an exit.
Should Romelu Lukaku still be called World Class?
Ahead of Belgium’s knock-out qualifier against Portugal for Euro 2020, Romelu Lukaku said in the press conference, “When people talk about Lewandowski, Benzema or Kane, they call them world-class.”
“But when it comes to me, it’s just considered ‘good form’. That motivates me to work harder and get stronger. I belong in that list of world-class players.”
However, the same statements came to haunt the player next season as his sensational return to Stamford Bridge didn’t go as planned. A string of low performances coupled with a falling out with Thomas Tuchel reduced Lukaku to merely a bench role.
Forcing the Belgian into sealing a move back to Inter Milan. At the time Lukaku made these bold comments, the Belgian was coming off a super season in Italy. He managed 30 goals and 11 assists in 44 games for Inter-Milan winning the Scudetto as well.
However, next season at Stamford Bridge, Romelu Lukaku could only manage to net 13 times in 42 games for Chelsea. On the other hand, Benzema and Lewndowksi both enjoyed splendid seasons scoring 40+ goals each for Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
While Lukaku definitely has the potential to be one of the best. He must make the most out of his loan move back to Inter Milan and prove once again that he is a much better striker than he was last season.
