“I can’t tell you”- Former PSG player hints he didn’t have good relations with Kylian Mbappe

Juventus midfielder Leandro Paredes has confessed that although the two were teammates at Paris Saint-Germain, Kylian Mbappe and him “didn’t have a relationship.” The 28-year-old played alongside Mbappe for the French champions for three years, but is currently on loan at Juve in an effort to increase his playing time before the World Cup.

Mbappe, a 23-year-old Frenchman, is rumoured to be unpopular in the PSG locker room, with Brazilian star Neymar among his critics. “I am not the one to talk about him. I had a connection with the ones I had a relationship with,” Paredes told ESPN Argentina while on international duty with Argentina this week.

“But the ones I didn’t have a relationship with, I can’t tell you about them,” he added. Neymar in particular appeared to ‘like’ a number of social media posts criticizing Mbappe after PSG’s 5-2 win over Montpellier in August when they argued over who would take a penalty. Head coach Christophe Galtier was later forced to play down any lingering frostiness.

The alleged rift between Mbappe and some of his high-profile teammates has been a recurring story this season. The World Cup champion was even charged with pushing for Neymar’s transfer this summer after the French signed a lucrative new deal to deter Real Madrid’s interest.

In an interview with ESPN Argentina, the midfielder explained his decision to leave being teammates with Lionel Messi at PSG as Paredes discussed the need to play outweighs being with the 35-year-old on a daily basis. “It was one of the things that was in the balance, being close to Leo to enjoy him, to continue associating myself in the best way, but when we compared everything I decided to go out and look for minutes,” Paredes said.

Paredes understood that heading to Turin and adjusting to a new club despite the FIFA World Cup being a few months away is a risk. “It was a difficult decision, the decision to change clubs before the World Cup due to adaptation,” Paredes added. “I think I made the right decision, I needed minutes to get to Qatar in the best way, and I think this was the right thing to do.”
