“I know for a fact”- Football pundit expects some players to ‘come out’ during 2022 FIFA World Cup
Gary Lineker on homosexuality and its impact on football fans for FIFA World Cup 2022
A former Barcelona player turned football commentator Gary Lineker has made significant disclosures that could have an impact on this year’s FIFA World Cup, which will kick off on October 20. He has spoken out against homosexuality and how the World Cup in Qatar might be impacted.
He uses a sarcastic tone to explain that since homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, now is the perfect time for gay couples to come out and declare their sexual orientation to the world. Gary said, “It would be great if one or two of them came out during the World Cup. It would be amazing.”
He also added, “I know for a fact that some have been very close and contemplated it. There’s a couple I know, but obviously it’s not for me to say who they are. I was hoping, because there are lots, obviously, lots of players that are having to live a lie. I’m sure it’s very difficult. I always thought it’s so difficult to know unless you’re in that circumstance and you’re living through how that is. I think what we’ve seen so far is that the feedback and the response, it will be incredibly positive.”
In Qatar, homosexuality is a crime that carries a maximum seven-year prison sentence. A person’s sexual orientation is a personal decision, and the world will advance until everyone accepts themselves as they are and helps them feel confident about it. Fans are eager for more.

In order to circumvent drinking restrictions, the Qatari government set up a desert party outside the stadium where English fans could consume alcohol for up to 17 hours per day. Additionally, it was prohibited for English supporters to celebrate by taking off their shirts. But as always, fan excitement for the World Cup is high.
