“I love to overthink and create stupid tactics; Tonight I take inspiration and there will be incredible tactics tomorrow”- Pep Guardiola ahead of facing Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid at UCL 2021-22 quarter-finals

Ahead of the Champions League clash between Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, Pep Guardiola was interviewed by Sky Sports regarding the match to which he had very peculiar responses. In the interview, he stated that it’s going to be exciting as well as challenging to face Simeone’s Atletico as even though they started their managing career at the same time, they have not faced each other being in different countries during this tenure.

He verbalized his beliefs saying, “He is more offensive than the people believe. They don’t want to take risks but when the ball is in our half… they know exactly the way they have to play in specific moments.”

He even reprimanded their arguments, comparing the two Coaches at the helm, and called them “stupid debates.”

“I’m not going to talk one second about stupid debates. Everyone tries to win. If they win he will be right. If we win I will be right,” added the Manchester City supremo.

The Spaniard then went on to challenge the press’ bias against the coaches, saying that the media judges the coach’s successes only on singular victories or losses rather than the whole season. The Spaniard has been heavily criticized over the recent years for his champions league exits especially against Lyon in 2020 and the Final against Chelsea in 2021.

Replying to these doubters Pep said, “In the Champions League, always I overthink. I overthink a lot. Absolutely. That’s why I’ve had good results. I love to overthink and create stupid tactics. Tonight I take inspiration and there will be incredible tactics tomorrow. We’ll play with 12.”

In terms of Gross numbers, Guardiola’s men outshine Simeone’s boys but Atletico tends to shine at such fixtures and often gives us surprises.

If Atletico can hold off Manchester City in an away fixture i.e. the first leg we can see them turning the tables in Wanda Metropolitano in the home game. A couple of goals in Machester may seal the deal for the sky blues. All that is left to see is who plays their cards right.
