Idrissa Gana Gueye missed PSG’s triumph in Montpellier after refusing to wear the ‘Pride Flag’ on his jersey: Reports

Gueye did not appear vs Montepellier

According to some reports in the French media, Idrissa Gana Gueye did not play in Paris Saint-Germain’s victory against Montpellier on Saturday as he did not want to wear a shirt with the pride flag on it.

Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG beat Montpellier four-nil at Stade de la Mosson, with Lionel Messi netting a brilliant brace. Angel di Maria and Kylian Mbappe also scored in the match.

Gueye, a former Everton midfielder, travelled with PSG but was not listed on the team list, with Pochettino subsequently admitting the player’s absence “for personal reasons, Gana had to leave the team sheet.” However, some reports pinpoint that it was not a personal reason but more of a personal choice that Gueye made, not supporting the pride flag and the LGBTQIA+ movement.

Idrissa Gana Gueye’s absence from the PSG game raises concerns over his homophobic nature

PSG v Montpellier

Gueye’s absence sparked speculation that he had skipped the game because he chose not to wear the LGBTQ+ community’s emblem, the rainbow flag. As part of an effort for the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia on May 17, all Ligue 1 games last weekend displayed the flag on players’ jersey numbers and captains’ armbands.

According to Get French Football News, French media L’Équipe and Le Parisien noted that Gueye had skipped the same round of games previous season due to “stomach ailments.”

Gueye’s administrators rejected that he skipped the game last season, but have yet to issue a comment on his withdrawal on Saturday. However, according to RMC Sport, Gueye’s absence was due to his reluctance to wear a kit with the rainbow flag on it.

PSG will be troubled by queries over Gueye’s unavailability last weekend as they approach their last match of the season. On Saturday, the Ligue 1 champions play Metz at the Parc des Princes.
