“If he can just work on those four basic things…”- Former Manchester United star makes bold prediction about Trent Alexander-Arnold amidst recent criticism

Gary Neville and Trent Alexander-Arnold
Gary Neville feels that Trent Alexander-Arnold can emerge as “the best right-back the world has ever produced” despite his recent struggles with Liverpool and absence from England’s squad to face Germany. The former Manchester United and England full-back focused on Alexander-Arnold’s defensive shortcomings in a thorough study of Liverpool’s troubles this season.
Neville and Jamie Carragher gave examples of how the 23-year-old has let himself down recently with his body language and work rate. The analyst identified four “principles of full-back play” something he asserts Trent Alexander-Arnold ought to be concentrating on to enhance his performance.
Neville also thinks Alexander-Arnold has the potential to surpass all previous right-backs in the game if he can improve the “very basic” defensive parts of his game.
“I think these are really basic things,” Neville said
“The hard part of the game, he is doing. No full-back that I’ve ever seen in this country can do what he can do.
“If he can just work on those four basic things and get those consistency elements with those things, we won’t just have one of the best attacking right-backs this country has ever produced, we’ll probably have the best right-back the world has ever produced, because this is a Cafu, this is that level of full-back, this is something unbelievably special.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s inclusion in England’s World Cup squad for the coming month is up for debate

Neville thinks that if the Liverpool right-back stays, it might be advantageous because it would give him more time to hone his defensive skills. Neville elaborated on how Alexander-“upright” Arnold’s body position has occasionally taken him off guard this season.
“Trent finds himself in a very relaxed, upright position, and the problem with that is that you can’t sprint from that position, you can’t change direction, you can’t swivel your head quickly.

“Against Brighton, his body shape was closed for the first goal. He was too narrow. He wasn’t in the right position, he wasn’t alert and he panicked. He’s doing the hard part of the game, it’s the basics where he’s struggling.
“Trent has been exceptional for four or five years for Liverpool. Every full-back now needs to have both attacking and defensive strengths. His attacking statistics are absolutely ridiculous – one of the great talents this country as produced.” Whatever you think of Neville, this was football analysis at its finest. Constructive criticism, but still extremely complimentary about Alexander-Arnold’s natural ability.
