“If Lionel Messi wins the Ballon d’Or this year, I’ll quit football”- When Cristiano Ronaldo made stunning claims about his future in 2019

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo

The author of Cristiano Ronaldo’s recently published book claims that the dramatic remark that he would “leave football” if Lionel Messi won the 2019 Ballon d’Or was made by Ronaldo. Former France Football overseas football director Thierry Marchand spoke with L’Equipe about meeting down with Ronaldo in late 2018 to develop themes and ideas for the book. He asserts that he was worried about the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s personal life, including his youth, his friends, and his family.

Instead, it’s said that Ronaldo said something about his famous Argentine opponent. While Ronaldo traveled from Sporting to United to Real Madrid and finally to Juventus, Marchand asserts that Messi chose to remain at Barcelona for the entirety of his career. The interview was conducted shortly after Ronaldo’s historic move to Turin in the summer of 2018. According to the sources, the Portuguese legend is credited with saying:  “If Messi wins the Ballon d’Or this year, I’m leaving football.”

In addition, Marchand stated that Jorge Mendes, Ronaldo’s agent, referred to Messi as “The Other Guy” and that, despite respect and love for Messi’s abilities as a player, Ronaldo despised him for lacking the bravery to venture outside of his “comfort zone” and “bubble” as a man.

Ronaldo allegedly felt he was taking a risk by moving to Juventus, altering “club, championships, and football culture,” and as a result, he was denied the 2018 Ballon d’Or.

The cause of Cristiano Ronaldo’s failure to succeed for Manchester United

Despite spending more than 150 million euros on transfers during the summer, United has not developed into the powerhouse that the acquisitions of Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho, and the Portuguese superstar Ronaldo were supposed to make them.

A wave of excitement spread throughout the football world when Ronaldo was re-signed by United in 2021. Supporters hailed the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as the hero United needed to break their ten-year league title drought. Since then, Ronaldo’s performances have fallen short of the lofty standards that his fans have come to anticipate, and they are very dissatisfied.

When a player of Ronaldo’s caliber is signed, the system must work for him instead of the other way around. Unfortunately, the club’s system is unsuited to his needs, which is bad news for everyone connected to it. In recent years, Ronaldo has played his best football when paired with a striker who can carry the load for him, like Karim Benzema at Real Madrid or Alvaro Morata at Juventus. Ronaldo has been utilized as the lone center forward in Man United’s 4-2-3-1 formation, and while he has performed admirably, it still appears that he is not quite suited to this position despite his history of scoring goals.
