”I’m not his biggest fan”- Liverpool legend slams France’s Olivier Giroud despite his decent show at 2022 FIFA World Cup

Graeme Souness and Olivier Giroud

Graeme Souness has slammed Olivier Giroud, calling his goal total ‘lucky’ as the forward approaches the title of France’s all-time leading scorer. Giroud has 51 goals for France, tied with Thierry Henry, and the 36-year-old is set to surpass Henry by the end of the World Cup.

Souness downplayed any comparison between the attackers on ITV before France’s game against Denmark on Saturday, arguing Giroud is only close to breaking the record because of how long Karim Benzema was out of the national team.

Souness said, ”I’m not his biggest fan , I would say his record is there for one reason: Benzema being out for such a long time because of all the controversy he’s involved with. Benzema, the current Ballon d’Or holder, will be missed in this French team this competition. Benzema is completely on another level.”

Olivier Giroud has tied Thierry Henry for the most goals in France

Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud has become France’s oldest player to score a World Cup goal. But that is only a small part of his illustrious career. The most noteworthy aspect is that Giroud became France’s all-time leading goal scorer by scoring a brace. France rallied from a goal behind to defeat Australia 4-1 and begin their World Cup defense on a high note.

Australia took an early lead through Craig Goodwin, and France, whose build-up to the competition had been plagued by injuries to stars such as Karim Benzema, Paul Pogba, and N’golo Kante, appeared to be in trouble.

They were able to regroup and equalize through Adrien Rabiot before Giroud put them ahead in the 32nd minute with a simple finish for his 50th international goal. In the second half, Kylian Mbappe scored, and Giroud secured the victory, matching Henry’s record of 51 goals for France.
