“In the best interests of the team” – Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton left out of England squad by manager Sarina Wiegman

Hannah Hampton, a player of the England side that won Euro 2022, has reportedly been left out of the squad by Sarina Wiegman due to her conduct and attitude at the team’s camps, according to the Guardian. Since the Euros, when she filled in for Mary Earps with Ellie Roebuck, Wiegman has not called up the 21-year-old Aston Villa goalkeeper, and it is unlikely that she will be chosen once more under the England manager.
Hampton hasn’t played for Villa since September 25 and was not selected for the team that lost to Chelsea on Sunday. Even though the manager, Carla Ward, said Hampton was advised to stay at home, she watched from the stands.
The Guardian was informed by numerous sources that Hampton’s behaviour and attitude in England age-group teams and at the club level have caused issues. Before England’s World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Luxembourg in September, Wiegman said Hampton was absent because “she has some personal issues that she has to solve so for her at this moment it’s better for her to stay at her club”.
Representatives of Hampton, Villa, and the Football Association declined to comment. The squad Wiegman announces on Tuesday for matches in November against Japan and Norway in Spain will not feature Hampton, who was also left out for friendlies in October against the United States and the Czech Republic.
Hampton was left out of Aston Villa’s squad as well following England’s snub

Hampton joined Villa from Birmingham in July 2021. She started the first two games of this season for Villa before missing time with an unidentified injury. Hampton was fit enough to compete against Chelsea, according to Ward, who left her out “in the best interests of the team.”
Hampton travelled to Kingsmeadow and posted a photo from the stands with the caption “let’s go team” and “utv” (Up the Villa). Ward said after the match: “Hannah was available. Something happened yesterday, and we decided it was in the best interests of the team for her to stay at home so I did exactly that. That’s all I really want to say on the matter.”
“I made the decision in the best interests of the team to leave her home and I left her home. I would probably prefer to talk about the 11 who were here.” Hampton received a first senior international call in February 2020 for the SheBelieves Cup, when Phil Neville was the manager. She made her senior England debut on 20 February this year, starting a 0-0 draw with Spain in the Arnold Clark Cup.
