In the 4-1 victory against Philadelphia, Ruiz netted Inter Miami’s fourth goal. During last Tuesday’s semi-final, he substituted in the 74th minute, and within 10 minutes, he left his imprint. Following the goal, the American-born player conversed with local media, acknowledging that the team’s new star, Messi, had offered him guidance before he stepped onto the field.
“One thing Messi told me is to stand still more,” the teenager told reporters. Aged 19, David Ruíz was born in the United States but represented the Honduran Under 20 team. He developed through Inter Miami FC’s youth system and earned a promotion to the senior squad on April 28 this year. He debuted in the starting lineup during the game against Cruz Azul, a match his team clinched 2-1, featuring a stunning stoppage-time goal by Messi.
“You want to run for every ball, look for space to have it more, but he has told me to stay still in my position, and the ball will come to me. I tried it, and it came off. I was more patient.”The extended penalty shootout compelled Ruiz to act as a penalty-taker for Inter Miami. He lived up to expectations, securing the ninth spot-kick and successfully scoring just before his team claimed the championship.
His Instagram account showcases numerous photos of him celebrating with Lionel Messi, and he even secured the signature of the Argentine maestro on his shirt. In his typical manner, Messi has completely dominated the competition, scoring in all seven of Inter Miami’s matches, tallying 10 goals. Next, Messi’s team plays against the New York Red Bulls on August 27 in MLS action. Before that, they have a US Open Cup semi-final against Cincinnati.
