Inter Miami was tasked with a difficult challenge against Houston Dynamo. The club owned by David Beckham found themselves in the final of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup final on Thursday. However, the sides were without their leader Lionel Messi. The 36-year-old led Miami to the final of the US Open Cup as the side looked to clinch their second trophy of the season.

However, an injury against Toronto meant that Lionel Messi would be watching on from the sidelines. Miami tasted defeat after a narrow 2-1 loss. Inter Miami looked bereft of creativity for the major part of the game. DeAndre Yedlin captained the side in the absence of their number 10. After an aggressive start, Miami went behind from a 24th-minute Griffin Dorsey strike.

Yedlin fouled Nelson Jr. inside the box before Amine Bassi doubled Dynamo’s lead. Miami found themselves on the back foot for the majority of the game. Houston went 3-0 up before the referee called it back for offside.

Miami breathed life back in through Josef Martìnez. However, his 92nd-minute strike was too little too late. A frustrated Lionel Messi had to watch on as Dynamo lifted the trophy on the night.

After defeat in the Cup final, Miami will now look to finish in the top 9, aiming for a playoff spot. Inter Miami will face New York City in the MLS on 1st October. The final marks only the second defeat following Lionel Messi’s arrival in July.
