“It is a little bit boring”- Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne lashes out at UEFA Nations League over same fixtures

While preparing for Thursday’s eighth encounter between his Belgium team and the Dragons in ten years, Kevin De Bruyne admitted he is “bored” of playing Wales. The remark was made after Belgium and Wales met in their Nations League and World Cup qualifying groups. The two teams will play this evening in the final round of Nations League group matches.
Speaking to sources as his squad prepared for their most recent match with Robert Page’s side just two months before the World Cup, De Bruyne lamented playing against “always the same teams” in international football.
‘I don’t know why. It is a little bit boring. I think it is 12 times I have played them, it is always the same teams.’
Kevin de Bruyne faced Wales nine times in the last ten years
In that period, Belgium has achieved four draws, two victories, and two defeats, with Wales becoming something of a bogey team for the side rated second in the world. The Nations League was created to raise the standard of competition at the highest level of international football by reducing pointless friendlies, but that also means regular matches against opponents of a comparable caliber.
The number of potential opponents has naturally decreased, and the tendency was always going to be in favor of more foreign matches. The midfielder rejected the idea of spending the last international break before the World Cup for training, saying his nation doesn’t require the time.
”I don’t think it makes that much of a difference anymore,” he said.
”We have been playing with the same team for years and years. We just try to finish the two games as best as possible and get ready for the World Cup.”
