Virgil van Dijk fires shots at the UEFA Nations League’s scheduling, says players should have input in deciding fixture schedules
Nations League
Liverpool defender, Virgil Van Dijk has blasted the UEFA Nations League for scheduling 4 league games for each country right after a long season of club football just ended. The 30 year was not happy that his national teammates along with all players representing their country had to play so many international games.
In the interview, Van Dijk is heard saying, “It is strange that there are four games after a long season…” He also says that there is nothing that we as players can do about it and that so many games after the club season only increase the chances of injury. He also said that UEFA should let players have input in fixture scheduling.
Virgil van Dijk is not the first to call out the Nations League for terrible scheduling of fixtures
The Nations League may be just another tournament where fans get to watch their favorite players play for their country. However, adding a new tournament in an already stressful season that footballers have to play is unjust. Just like Virgil van Dijk, many other European stars have called out the Nations League, calling it just a money-making machine for UEFA.
Manchester City star, Kevin de Bryune also blasted the Nations League schedule. He said, “For me, the Nations League is unimportant. We have to play those matches, but it’s a kind of practice campaign. Everyone has had a very tough season.” De Bruyne said this after it was announced that each team will play 4 Nations League games in the Summer.
Last year, Kevin de Bryune’s national teammate, Thibaut Courtois also slammed the Nations League over scheduling. After his team lost 2-1 to Italy in the third-place play-off. Courtois has since withdrawn from the Belgian squad for this summer’s 4 games.
