Kylian Mbappe, a striker for Paris Saint-Germain and France, has acknowledged that leaving Paris for Real Madrid this summer was “easier” than staying in Paris.

The 23-year-old Mbappe was extensively connected to a free transfer to Los Blancos, but after months of rumours, he decided to sign a long term deal at the Parc des Princes.

This is why Kylian Mbappe rejected Real Madrid and stayed at PSG:

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Mbappe said: “I always talk about my ambition, what I want to do, and now it’s time. In Paris, the book is fully white. What an opportunity! You have to think differently.

“Of course, it was easier to go to Madrid. But I have this ambition. I’m French. I’m a child of Paris, and to win in Paris, it’s something really special—really special. It writes your name in the history of your country for life. You can stay here to have success.

“For us it’s a big message, because when I announced I stay, a lot of things change in the mentality of people. People start to say, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to go out. You don’t need to leave the country’.”

With a deal at the Parc des Princes that runs until 2025, it’s unlikely that Mbappe will leave the club anytime soon, even if Real Madrid rekindles their interest. However, questions have been raised about whether Mbappe is truly happy at PSG following several issues on the field, including a rumored feud with teammate Neymar.

Mbappe, who has made 19 appearances across all competitions this season and has tallied 18 goals and five assists, will be leading France’s World Cup quest as they attempt to defend the championship they won in 2018.

In contrast, Ancelotti’s team spent €100 million on Aurelien Tchouameni, a teammate of Mbappe’s on the international stage, from AS Monaco during the summer window.
