“It was probably one of the worst days of his life” – Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes reflects back on former manager’s brutal sacking
In an effort to divert attention from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as his time as Manchester United manager came to a disastrous end, Bruno Fernandes demonstrated his class. Following a poor start to the season, a devastating loss at Watford in November 2021 proved to be the manager’s fatal blow.
United suffered their fifth defeat in seven Premier League games on a dismal afternoon at Vicarage Road as Harry Maguire was dismissed and they conceded four goals in the process. As Solskjaer went over to thank the supporters who had travelled down to Hertfordshire, the writing was already on the wall. He was fired one day later.
The troubled manager held up his hands in apology as he walked toward the away end as Watford supporters mocked him with chants of “Ole’s at the wheel.” In close proximity to Solskjaer, Fernandes could be seen pointing to his colleagues and waving a finger at the onlookers as if to warn them not to jeer the former forward insisting that United’s players were more deserving of criticism than their manager.

What Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes had to say about his old gaffer?
Reflecting on the painful moment when it was time for Solskjaer to say his farewells, Fernandes confessed: “When he came to say goodbye to everyone, it was a tough message for him and really difficult. You could feel it was probably one of the worst days of his life.”
The 28-year-old also revealed Solskjaer continues to message him from time to time, adding: “He’s someone who I want to remain in touch with. I said that to him before he left the club.”
The Old Trafford hero guided the Red Devils to second place in the Premier League in the 2020–21 season while scoring 126 goals for United during his playing career and earning nine accolades. The Champions League comeback victory over Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019 was one of the high points of his managerial tenure.
