“It wasn’t related to Kylian Mbappe”- Florentino Perez reveals why Real Madrid did not sign Erling Haaland

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has explained why the club did not seek Erling Haaland’s signing this summer. The Norwegian striker joined Manchester City for a reputed £51 million deal from Borussia Dortmund. For the Bundesliga side, he tallied 86 goals in 89 appearances in all competitions, establishing himself as one of the best-attacking prospects in the world.

Despite the fact that the player was a popular transfer target, City closed the transaction promptly. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain has been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid this summer. However, the Frenchman reversed his decision and signed a new contract with PSG.

Perez, on the other hand, argued that Real’s failure to sign Haaland had nothing to do with their desire to sign Mbappe. According to El Chiringuito TV (via Fabrizio Romano), Real Madrid president Jose Mourinho said:

“I’m not sure if Erling Haaland’s deal with Man City has a release clause. I’ve heard rumors about it, but nothing has been proven. He’s a fantastic player, but we already have Benzema. It has nothing to do with Mbappé.”

Perez added to the topic by saying: “Certainly, the Mbappé transaction did not cause any issues with the Haaland deal. We have Benzema, so having him with Karim was unthinkable. We won’t be able to sign Haaland to sit on the bench. Haaland is a superb and exceptional player.”

Madrid was said to be interested in signing the French striker ahead of the new campaign. Los Blancos were expecting to sign Mbappe on a free transfer when his previous deal with PSG expired this summer.

The French superstar, on the other hand, agreed to a new three-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain, which would keep him at the club until 2025. It is unclear whether Madrid would pursue the player in the upcoming years, but for the time being, he will remain in Paris.
