“It’s a revenge match”- Barcelona boss issues stern warning to Bayern Munich ahead of Champions League clash

Xavi and Robert Lewandowski

Even if it would take a miracle for FC Barcelona to advance through the round of 16, coach Xavi Hernandez still has some faith in his team’s ability to achieve it. Prior to Wednesday’s home game against Bayern Munich, Xavi said in a press conference, “It’s a revenge match and for Roberto too.”

In order to advance, Barcelona must win that match and hope Inter Milan loses to Viktoria Plzen, who is last in their group with no points after four games. Two hours earlier, Inter Milan takes on Viktoria Plzen.

“It is a minimum chance and I am always optimistic, but when something doesn’t depend on you, you aren’t as positive. It’s logical,” Xavi acknowledged this, stating that before playing Bayern, he and his team would watch the Inter Milan-Plzen game together.

Barcelona and Bayern Munich

After a week that wrecked their season-long aims, Barcelona needed a goal festival to rebuild their confidence. The victories over Villarreal and Athletic Club, two of La Liga’s top teams, by scores of 3-0 and 4-0 each, respectively, served as a good reminder of their talent.

It doesn’t erase the disappointment of being on the verge of Champions League elimination or the pitiful showing against Real Madrid. However, it does make it simpler to advance and reevaluate the team’s objectives and expectations.

Things could have turned from bad to absolutely terrible if Barcelona hadn’t gathered themselves up and achieved the results against two top-tier opponents. They went above and beyond to make amends to the supporters by giving us two of the season’s best performances. Perhaps it’s too late now, but Xavi did require modifications at some point.

Sergio Busquets was benched against Villarreal, and ideally his inclusion in the starting lineup against Athletic Club means he’ll be there again on Wednesday when Barcelona takes on Bayern Munich. He will be a great rotational player going ahead, but we need to see what Frenkie de Jong can accomplish when given a stretch of games as the defensive midfielder.
