Ivan Toney has been linked with a move away from Brentford ever since the club got promotion to the Premier League. Scoring 32 goals in his first two seasons, while also considering how lethal he is in the air, put him on the shortlist for many clubs.
The plan to sign him shut for many clubs, as he got banned for betting. Serving a ban of eight months, Toney returned and looked like his former self, scoring 3 in 4. With clubs reigniting their interest for the forward, Brentford manager Thomas Frank admitted that they could sell him the next season.
Talking to the Danish magazine Tipsbladet, Frank confirmed that the club could sell him, despite being a valuable asset to the club. He acknowledged how he had only a year left in his contract and wanted to see him at a top team as it would be fun.
After Brentford’s 0-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Mollineux, Toney was asked about his manager’s comments, and he jokingly said the manager didn’t want him anyways. He further commented on his future, saying he can’t get clubs to get him.
I see that as he doesn't want me! The manager has said what he's said but I can't make clubs come and get me. I've just got to keep doing what I do and that's score goals. What will be will be.When asked about Thomas Frank’s comments in the post-match interview
Toney has been linked to clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester United before being banned. As of now, Arsenal and Chelsea are competing for the player’s signature.
Ivan Toney’s return to football
Being banned for eight months, Toney missed the first half of the season for Brentford. The club did sign Neal Maupey on loan as a replacement, but he scored only five goals in 18 appearances so far.
Before returning to Premier League football, the forward played for the reserve side in a friendly, where he scored a hat trick against Southampton B. He finally got his PL return against Nottingham Forest.
In his first appearance in over eight months, he scored a free-kick in a winning cause. It was a controversial goal as he moved the ball and foam to get a better angle. He once again scored against Tottenham Hotspur, but the Bees lost the match 3-2. Toney was goalless against Manchester City, but scored against Wolves in a 2-0 victory.
Thomas Frank and his team now prepare as they host league toppers, Liverpool. In the return fixture earlier that season, the Reds put three past the Bees.
