Jadon Sancho has finally received his first start for Borussia Dortmund ever since he returned to the club. After being exiled from Manchester United‘s first team, he couldn’t play a single game until he went to Germany for a short loan.
On his first appearance for the club as a substitute, he managed to assist as Dortmund beat Darmstadt 3-0. He once again had an important role in Dortmund’s 4-0 victory over Koln as his brilliant footwork got them a penalty.
Getting his first start, he played on the left wing. He didn’t manage a goal or assist but played a vital role in terrorizing the opposition’s defense. He had 13 duels, out of which he won eight. Along with that, he was fouled thrice, with the Koln defenders unable to contain him.
In the 58th minute, he received the ball on the edge of the box. He managed to go past a defender and then took on Rasmus Carstensen. Sancho successfully beat the Dane, but in desperation, he pulled the winger back. Losing balance, Sancho fell and referee Daniel Schalger pointed to the spot. Niclas Fullkrug stepped up to take the penalty and scored, doubling the lead.
Borussia Dortmund begin late charge for top-four spot
Borussia Dortmund haven’t lived up to their performances in the previous season. Finishing as runner-ups, losing the league on the final day, they have failed to even touch the top three. Since the start of the league, they have been shifting between 4th and 5th. As of now, they are 12 points off the top and one point away from the top four.
Losing key players like Jude Bellingham and Raphael Gerrerio might have affected their form, but they did sign Marcel Sabitzerm, Niclas Fullkrug, and Nmecha as reinforcements. With the January transfer window on, they loaned in Jadon Sancho and Ian Maatsen and have begun a late charge to get Champions League football the next season.
So far in 2024, they have faced Darmstadt and Cologne, who are in the relegation zone and have won with ease. They will now face VFL Bochum, Heidenheim, and SC Freiburg for their next Bundesliga fixtures. On the 21st of February, they face PSV Eindhoven in the UEFA Champions League for the round of 16.
