Jamie Carragher, a Liverpool icon and football pundit, has asked the Premier League and UEFA to intervene to prevent big talents like Bernardo Silva from leaving England for the Saudi Pro League. Cristiano Ronaldo was the first star to move from the Premier League to Saudi Arabia, and he was followed by Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kante moving to Al-Ittihad.

Addressing the rumors regarding Bernardo Silva moving to Saudi, Carragher tweeted, “Bernardo Silva is in his peak years & has been one of the best players in Europe for the last five years! I wasn’t worried about the Saudi League taking players in their 30’s, a touch worried with players below the elite (Neves) but if this happens it feels like a game changer.”

The Liverpool legend added, “Saudi have taken over Golf, the big Boxing fights & now they want to take over football!! This sports washing needs to be stopped!” It is his opinion that Saudi Arabia is using financial strength to dominate various sports.

Despite these protests from Carragher, Saudi Arabian investment in football does not look close to an end. Clubs from Saudi are still making offers for Europe’s elite offers. Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and even Bernardo Silva are yet to weigh offers from Saudi.

Gary Neville has called on the Premier League to stop the transfer of players to Saudi Arabia until it is certain the integrity of its competition is not being put at risk. Neville has said there must be clarity in transactions by the Saudi Arabian clubs. He has asked for a halt until transparency is ensured.

“The Premier League should put an instant embargo on transfers to Saudi Arabia to ensure the integrity of the game isn’t being damaged,” Neville said. The former Manchester United player aims to protect the values of the English game. He also does not want any mishandling in the dealings and thus has asked for a halt.

He further attacked United’s rivals Chelsea FC and accused them of improper dealings. “I do believe, at this moment in time, transfers should be halted until you look into the ownership structure at Chelsea and whether there are beneficial transfer dealings that are improper.” quoted Neville. It was recently reported that Clearlake Investment Group, the co-owners of Chelsea are also members of the Saudi royalty and now they are buying players from the club to help Boehly balance the sheets.
