Aston Villa and Scotland midfielder John McGinn was livid with the officials in his country’s defeat against Spain in the Euro qualifiers. The Scottish team needed a point to qualify but were held back by the former champions.
The midfielder was furious at the decision to cancel out his midfield partner Scott McTominay‘s stunning free-kick goal by the Dutch referee Serdar Gozubuyuk. The officials had argued over initiating a spot-kick against Scotland due to a foul on goalkeeper Unai Simon by Jack Hendry.
Spain’s captain and striker Alvaro Morata capitalized on the opportunity by giving his side a lead in the 74th minute. Scotland also missed a few chances after, which added salt to their wounds and hopes of qualifying.
However, many pundits even argued the goal should have stood as the Scottish player was not interfering with play, but the on-pitch- referees thought otherwise. McGinn vented his agony by saying he had to be mindful and ‘very careful‘ of his words regarding the referee as he struggled to grasp his emotions after the game.
John McGinn is beaming with confidence with his Scotland squad
Under the leadership of manager Steve Clarke, Scotland’s national team is setting its sights on Euro 2024 qualification with unwavering determination. Having demonstrated a perfect record in Group A, securing five wins from five matches and 15 points, including a remarkable 2-0 victory over Spain at Hampden in March, the Scots currently lead the group. This outstanding performance has sparked optimism for the future of Scottish football.
Midfielder John McGinn expressed that there is still much more to come from the team. McGinn, who captains Aston Villa, emphasized that the squad is at a favorable age and is gaining valuable experience from high-stakes matches. Furthermore, he noted the emergence of talented young players poised to make their mark on the national team, further strengthening Scotland’s position on the international stage.
Regardless of the results, the fans’ unity and support have motivated the squad to continue delivering success and further ignite the passion for football nationwide. With their eyes set on Euro 2024 qualification, Scotland’s journey promises to be a source of excitement and pride for the country.
