Romelu Lukaka scored for Roma against Empoli this past weekend. Following this Jose Mourinho believes Inter Milan has no reason to be unhappy over their ex-striker playing for The Yellow and Reds. Lukaku joined Roma on loan after it was clear that the player had no intention of returning to Chelsea.

This marks the 2nd consecutive season that Lukaku has spent a season away on loan from Chelsea after signing for the Blues in 2021. The Belgian striker joined his former coach Jose Mourinho at Roma. To put the icing on the cake, he scored for the Portuguese’s side in a match that saw Roma put seven goals past Florence-based side, Empoli. This is Mourinho’s second tenure in Italian Football after he won the treble with Inter Milan back in 2010. Lukaku also has a history with Inter Milan as he was part of the Conte side that won the Serie A for the first time since Mourinho was at the helm.

“At Inter, they have no reason to be angry – they should be happy for their former manager, who needed Romelu,” Jose Mourinho quoted after Roma’s empathic win. “For me, it wasn’t important whether Lukaku scored or not but perhaps it was for him. He has always shown that he wants to make himself available,” he added.

Lukaku left Inter Milan last season in not the best manner. The Belgium striker – while he did bring a different kind of threat – was quite poor in the finishing department in the Champions League final against Manchester City. With that performance being the final one for Inter Milan, fans may be upset at the strike now playing for a different Serie A side. One that boasts their former treble-winning manager.

The victory against Empoli was a huge one as Roma finally got their first win of the season.

Romelu Lukaku, the football mercenary

Lukaku’s loan move to Roma makes this his 7th club in 14 years as a professional football player. The Belgium striker started his career at Anderlecht where he played for two years. Chelsea secured his services after the striker scored 33 in 73 league appearances in Belgium. Lukaku spent three years at Chelsea, two of which were out on loan. The striker was impressive in his loan spells and was able to secure a move to Manchester United after spending three years at Everton where he scored 53 goals in 110 Premier League appearances.

However, Lukaku only spent two years at United before making a move to Italy. Furthermore, his spell with Inter Milan will most likely go down as a memorable time in his career. The Belgian bulldozer scored 24 goals in 36 appearances for Inter winning them their first Serie A title in a decade. A big money move back to Chelsea was on the cards. However, his second tenure went poorly as well returning to Inter – on a loan – after only one year in London.

Two years have passed since then and now Lukaku finds himself at AS Roma. Reunited with his Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho, the player will be looking to revitalize his career after having back-to-back poor seasons.
