Jules Kounde, Barcelona’s new defender claims Guardiola nearly convinced him to join Man City

Jules Kounde, Barcelona’s new defender has admitted that he chatted with Pep Guardiola about the possibility of moving to Manchester City. The French defender was acquired by the Catalan club from Sevilla in August for €55 million.

The 23-year- old’s terms were agreed upon by Chelsea and Sevilla last year, but Chelsea was not willing to pay Sevilla’s asking price. In the summer transfer window, he was once more connected to a move to west London but Barcelona intervened and snatched the signature from the Blues just as it appeared they were in the lead.

Jules Kounde said about his conversation with Pep Guardiola: “Guardiola interested in signing me? Yes, in my first year in Sevilla, Guardiola called me. He told me he loved me and that he believed I would fit in with the way he played.”

Speaking earlier this month, Kounde said it was an “easy choice” to snub a move to from Stamford Bridge in favour of the Camp Nou. He said: “Barca is still a club able to attract anyone, and the manager was very important too.

“He gave me a lot of confidence and I liked his way of approaching football.

“It was an easy choice for me because he gave me all that I was looking for.”

Barcelona previously acquired Raphinha from Leeds United despite the fact that the Whites had accepted a bid from the Londoners. Kounde’s signing was not the first time Barcelona acquired a player who was a top target for Chelsea.
