Barcelona hasn’t had a significant injury problem thus far in the 2022–23 season, but the international break has ended that fortunate streak. The hamstring soreness that forced Jules Kounde to miss France’s match against Austria on Thursday is particularly concerning.

The French defender will return to Barcelona for additional testing, but preliminary scans indicate that he will be sidelined for two to four weeks, casting doubt on his ability to play in the October Clasico at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. In the Nations League match on Thursday night, Kounde barely played the opening 20 minutes before experiencing pain in his left hamstring and being unable to continue.

When asked about his status, Deschamps recognized the severity of the injury and said he would miss the match against Denmark on Sunday. “The players are subjected to a hellish schedule with the run of matches. There are also psychological demands,” the French coach admitted.

Kounde will have an MRI scan whenever he returns to Spain under the supervision of the Blaugrana’s own medical team. His expected recovery time is estimated to be between two and four weeks. Since his arrival at the Camp Nou, Kounde has grown in stature, with Xavi relying on the defender, particularly at right-back. Therefore, his absence is a significant setback for the coach’s objectives.

Jules Kounde hasn’t been the only Barcelona player to get injured on International duty

Barcelona’s Memphis Depay, Ousmane Dembele, and Jules Kounde sustained injuries while serving their countries. All three had excellent nights because their countries won the Netherlands and France defeated Poland and Austria, respectively, by scores of 2-0. However, from a personal standpoint, things didn’t go as smoothly.

After 49 minutes in Warsaw, Memphis collapsed holding his hamstring and had to be replaced right away by Vincent Janssen. While Dembele entered the game in the final 10 minutes and experienced muscle pain before the game ended in Paris, Kounde was forced off after just 23 minutes due to an injury.

The situation for the other two doesn’t seem as promising as it does for Dembele, whose injury is only believed to be slight and could yet allow him to play for France on Sunday.
