Liverpool cruised past Newcastle United in the Premier League on Monday. The Reds netted four times in the second half to ensure a 4-2 win against Newcastle in a much-anticipated fixture. Even though a brace from Mohamed Salah and goals from Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones were enough for Liverpool, striker Darwin Nunez didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp quickly came to defend his #9.

The Uruguayan striker had a total of eight shots against Newcastle but failed to register a goal. He was subject to criticism with many asking questions on his finishing ability. However, Klopp remained confident of the player. He praised a ‘special’ involvement by the #9, leading up to Mohamed Salah’s opener for Liverpool. The striker selflessly squared the ball to Salah who made no mistake to make it 1-0.

Klopp had some words of praise for his striker. He said,

What's extremely special is that he squared the ball instead of finishing. As long as he has these moments, it's all fine. Nobody has to worry about Darwin.

Klopp also slammed Nunez’s critics for doubting his ability in front of goal. With Mo Salah leaving for AFCON, the weight of carrying the attack will fall on Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.

Liverpool in for anxious wait as Klopp hints at Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury

Liverpool were dominant against Newcastle in their win on Monday. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai ran the midfield against the Magpies, but the latter was substituted in the 64th minute. Even though Klopp later revealed that the substitution was pre-meditated, Szoboszlai was captured clutching his hamstring, giving reason for concern.

Klopp revealed that the change came a minute or so late because the Hungarian ‘felt his hamstring in the last situation’. He also said that they are yet to find out the extent of his injury. The #8 will likely undergo scans and tests which will determine whether player and club are set for a long wait on the sidelines. The club have had a very difficult season because of injury, which has ruled out important players like Andy Robertson, Joel Matip and Thiago.

We don’t know the extent of it, obviously, so we have to wait.

Adding to Liverpool’s concern, Wataru Endo and Salah leave immediately for AFCON, putting pressure on Szoboszlai’s ‘injury’. As for upcoming games, Liverpool are up against Arsenal and Fulham in the FA Cup and EFL Cup respectively. They are top of the Premier League table and have made it to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup as well. Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo can miss out until as late as February 11.
