Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema‘s tussle with Al-Ittihad management has flared up yet again. The French striker made headlines on Wednesday as the striker ‘stormed out’ hours after returning to club training. Amidst reports that there is growing dissatisfaction between the club and the player, the incident has definitely put Benzema’s future at Al-Ittihad on strings.
It was only weeks ago that Benzema put an end to rumors surrounding his desire to leave the Saudi Pro League champions. The controversy surrounding Benzema kicked off when the player went AWOL in January, failing to report to training on time. It was reported that he arrived 17 days late. A source close to the club also revealed that they were unable to contact the player for ten days!
As per popular news outlets, Benzema was made to train alone by head coach Marcelo Gallardo. The player became angry and walked out of the session as per reports.
In addition to the same, Benzema was also absent from the team that faced Al-Tai on Wednesday. He has scored 9 goals and made 15 assists in the league. He also has 18 months left on his €100-million-a-season deal.
What went wrong for Karim Benzema at Al-Ittihad?
The former Real Madrid captain shocked the footballing community last season when he announced his decision to leave the club. Benzema joined Al-Ittihad on a whopping 100-million-a-season, after running down his Real Madrid contract. The player looked ‘out of place’ since the time he arrived at the club, with a video of his teammates welcoming the player and his subsequent reaction summing up the claim.
That being said, Benzema got off to a good goal-scoring start, scoring 4 goals in his first five games for the club. However, a gradual slump in form and his inability to recreate his goal-scoring prowess at Madrid saw a faction of his own supporters turn on him. He was harshly criticized for the club’s poor showing against Al-Nassr, which his side ended up losing 5-2.
Towards the start of the January transfer window, there were rumors that the player was looking for a way out of the club. Former manager Nuno Espirito Santo also admitted that Benzema had trouble adjusting to the team’s tactics and style of play. Current manager Marcelo Gallardo’s arrival has flared things up, with the player recently storming out of a training session. After moves to the Premier League fell through, it remains to be seen what the club will make of Benzema’s future at the club.
