Karim Benzema becomes the first Real Madrid player since Cristiano Ronaldo to score more than 40 goals in a single season
Real Madrid’s star Karim Benzema has scored 41 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions and becomes the first Madridista to do this since Ronaldo’s departure from the Santiago Bernabeu. Benzema has been in a tremendous form of his life as he single-handedly carried the Los Blancos to yet another European glory. He scored a brace against Manchester City in the semi-final first-leg tie, although they lost 4-3.
Benzema has scored 9 goals in the knockout stages as he is one goal behind Cristiano Ronaldo who holds the record with 10 goals in the 2016/17 season.
The Frenchman has scored 14 goals in the champions league 2021/22 and is now the top-scorer in the champions league. He will become the top scorer of UCL for the first time in his life. With 3 against PSG, 4 against Chelsea, and 2 against Manchester City with the second leg still to play.
After his ‘Panenka kick’ from the spot against Manchester City, he claimed, “all the goalkeepers have studied my penalties and I had to change. The penalty by me was cold-blooded.”
Real Madrid looks to win their 14th Champions League trophy but has Pep Guardiola’s side as the ‘party spoiler’
Real Madrid trails by one goal from the first-leg semifinal tie against Manchester City and would look to change the tie in the second leg at home as they host Manchester City next week. Benzema has been the savior for the Los Blancos after they were 2-0 down in the first half and pulled one back and his penalty kick from the spot saw them decrease the goal count to fight in the second leg.
Manchester City has destroyed Madrid’s defense with their waves of attacks as they pressurized the defenders for a long period of time. They took a 2-goal lead in the first half and scored another two in the second half to take a 4-3 lead and will travel to Madrid after a few days.
