Manchester City’s captain, Kevin De Bruyne might unexpectedly choose to depart the club during the 2024 summer transfer window and potentially move to the emerging Saudi Pro League. Reports suggest that the Saudi Public Investment Fund eye the midfielder as a primary summer target.

Regarded as one of the elite midfielders of his generation, the Belgian international has amassed 358 appearances for Manchester City across nine seasons. His £55 million transfer from Wolfsburg marked the start of a successful tenure where he has now secured a UEFA Champions League title and has accumulated five Premier League titles. Despite his desire to end his career at the Etihad Stadium, the 32-year-old midfielder is attracting interest from Saudi league clubs. Furthermore, his contract runs dry in 2025.

De Bruyne might consider a move to the Saudi Pro League, following the path of other top players who joined last season. The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which owns four SPL clubs—Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Hilal, has rekindled their interest in the City star. They see him as a key target for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, the Belgian international has drawn attention from Cristiano Ronaldo‘s Al-Nassr, and Al-Qadsiah. He could potentially receive an enticing contract involving a substantial transfer fee and a lucrative salary.

It remains to be seen, where the 32-year-old will end up. Speculation indicates that City might consider selling the player in the summer of 2024 instead of letting him go for free in 2025. This comes notably after City’s recent agreement to sign attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri from River Plate, seen as a successor to De Bruyne.

The midfielder is expected to come back in January after recently returning to training and being part of the squad against Sheffield United on December 30th. Pep Guardiola is optimistic about the midfielder playing in City’s FA Cup match against Huddersfield on January 7th, 2024.

The team has faced challenges in the midfielder’s absence for over four months, dropping to 4th place in the Premier League. His return is eagerly awaited as the club needs his leadership, especially after losing Gundogan and Mahrez last season.
