Key Chelsea star could miss 2022 FIFA World Cup after suffering a knee injury: Reports
Reece James
According to numerous reports, Reece James may not play in the World Cup after hurting his knee against AC Milan.
In the second half of Chelsea’s 2-0 Champions League victory over AC Milan on Wednesday, Reece James was injured by Theo Hernandez’s challenge and was substituted.
Early signs of the injury suggested it was not catastrophic, but more scans on Thursday apparently showed the condition is considerably worse than first believed. Prior to Sunday’s match against Aston Villa, Chelsea manager Graham Potter attempted to allay concerns about the 22-year-old’s fitness.
“There is no point looking at a doomsday scenario just yet,” he said.
“When we spoke yesterday he didn’t feel so bad but you need to get things checked and see the way forward.”
After meeting a specialist this weekend, he stated the club will decide within the next 48 hours if he will have surgery.
James’ absence would be a significant blow to England manager Gareth Southgate with the World Cup drawing near.

Reece James plays a key role in Chelsea
At recent friendlies, James has been England’s first choice at right-back thanks to an uncommon plethora of players of the highest caliber in the position. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, and James are all questionable for Qatar due to injuries, which limits Southgate’s options and makes Kieran Trippier of Newcastle the natural replacement.
