“Kill him”: When Sergio Ramos helped Real Madrid win the Spanish Super Cup by asking Federico Valverde to deliberately commit a foul on Alvaro Morata two years ago
Real Madrid played Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup in 2020 where they won the game in penalties after Valverde saw a red card in the extra-time. He committed a tackle on former Real Madrid player Alvaro Morata who was through on goal to face Courtois one-on-one but the Uruguayan made one of the biggest tackles to deny Morata from scoring.
The tackle helped Real Madrid to take the match to penalties where they went on to win the match. Valverde describes the whole incident by saying that he was running with his heart in his mouth when Sergio Ramos screamed “Kill him” when Morata was through with the ball.
Referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez gave Valverde a straight red card in the final minutes of the extra time in the 115th minute after he brought down Alvaro Morata outside the box. The Spanish forward had a clear vision of the goal with only Courtois in front of him as he made a strong run beating Valverde which made him commit the foul for his side at that moment.
Morata was unable to get his shot off due to Valverde’s premeditated foul, prolonging the game into extra time before Madrid prevailed on penalties. As a result, the Real Madrid player has won the hearts of the Los Blancos fans after his sacrifice for the team.
“Tackling Morata? I don’t know if this got me into the hearts of Madridistas but I’m not proud fouling any opponent. It was a clean foul, I didn’t want to injure him. I owe it to my crest and I will always defend my crest even against the rules of the game”, Valverde said about his foul.

Diego Simeone spoke about Real Madrid’s Valverde after the foul
Unlike other Atletico Madrid’s fans and staff, Diego Simeone went on to defend the Uruguayan star at the end of the game. As he was sent off Simeone was seen tapping his back in appreciation of the incident which was important for any team at that moment.
He said Valverde deserved the Man of the Match after his match-winning tackle which helped Real Madrid go on to win the Super Cup final on penalties. “I think the award for the best player makes perfect sense because Valverde won the game with that action,” Simeone told a press conference.
