Jürgen Klopp has taken one of the most subtle yet cheeky digs at Chelsea players Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo. The duo comprise Liverpool’s ‘failed’ summer transfer targets and currently pile their trade at Chelsea. Caicedo was the frontrunner to replace Fabinho in midfield for the Reds. However, Chelsea secured the Ecuadorian’s services despite Liverpool making a £111 million bid for the player.
Romeo Lavia also preferred the Blues, joining them on a £58 million deal. However, neither of the moves has managed to reach their potential, as Caicedo has been ‘struggling’ with his form. Lavia on the other hand, is yet to play due to injury. Speaking at the Anfield Road Stand expansion event, Klopp reminded fans as well as their rivals of what happened last summer.
Some strange things happened in the transfer market in the summer, but here between us I can say 'My God, were we lucky, eh?'
Klopp’s cheeky dig forced the crowd into laughter as he added “I’m happy that it worked out, but you never know before“. The German was referring to their signing of Wataru Endō, a 30-year-old midfielder from VfB Stuttgart. “Thanks heavens we looked at the situation twice and made it clear that we want this boy“.
Klopp also noted his willingness to join the club, and added that “it helped a lot“. Chelsea, despite their ‘extravagant’ summer signings, find themselves 12th. Liverpool are top of the Premier League with 37 points.
Liverpool & Bayern Munich set to take on ‘depleted’ Manchester United
League leaders Liverpool face their ‘favorite’ rivals Manchester United on Sunday, December 17th. Jürgen Klopp and co. will feel confident heading into the tie, keeping in mind the 7-0 massacre they forced at Anfield. However, Erik ten Hag will be missing a number of his preferred starters against Liverpool. Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, and Anthony Martial are just to name a few.
United captain Bruno Fernandes will be missing the trip to Anfield. The skipper picked up a fifth yellow card this season, forcing a one-match-ban. A recent training session ahead of the mid-week clash vs Bayern Munich did not feature Rashford and Martial. Even though their absence has been blamed on ‘illness’, it is unsure whether they will return in time for the game against Liverpool.
However, reports that Casemiro has returned to the squad will offer slight relief to United. Victor Lindelof has also returned to first-team training but remains to be seen whether he will feature against Liverpool. Lisandro Martìnez has also returned from injury but is currently undergoing an individual training program. Subsequently, Liverpool will have the upper hand, as United have only managed to win one of their last 4 games.
