Argentine maestro Lionel Messi was named the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year 2023 on Monday at the awards ceremony held today in Paris, France. The Laureus World Sports Awards is an annual award ceremony that honors individual players and teams from the world of sports for their sporting achievements throughout the year.
The honor has been awarded since 2000. Legendary sportspersons like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Michael Schumacher, and Usain Bolt, among others, have all won the award since its inception.
Messi himself had been named the Sportsman of the Year for 2020, along with Lewis Hamilton. Now, after winning the FIFA World Cup 2022 with Argentina in Qatar, Messi has been honored with the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year title once again for 2023.
After accepting the award, Messi said, “I had a lot of success at Barcelona. But I still had this thorn with the Argentine team but I succeeded”. After this, the Argentina captain becomes the first-ever footballer to win the award on more than one occasion.

PSG reportedly announced Messi’s return on its website. They have posted a picture of Messi running with a ball at the club’s training ground. Lionel Messi returned to training Monday with his Paris Saint-Germain teammates. It’s almost less than a week after being suspended by the French league club.
The club did not say whether Messi would be available for the club’s next league game against Ajaccio on Saturday. With just four games left to play, PSG tops the standings with a six-point lead over Lens.
Messi missed practice last Monday while he was on a promotional trip to Saudi Arabia. And the French club announced his suspension a day later. PSG hadn’t specified the length of the suspension, though French media reported it to be two weeks. Messi later apologized to the club and his teammates for traveling without PSG’s permission.
The Argentine maestro is not expected to extend his contract with PSG beyond this season. According to reports, the player is linked with Inter Miami in Major League Soccer, a return to Barcelona, and a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia.
Messi joined PSG in 2021 after winning every major title with Barcelona. The Catalan club that Messi called home from the age of 13 couldn’t afford to keep him. It is because of large debts and the Spanish league’s financial regulations. PSG fans hoped Messi’s arrival would result in an elusive Champions League title. Instead, the Qatari-backed club was eliminated in the round of 16 in consecutive seasons.
