One of the best footballers, Lionel Messi, recently expressed regret, even though he has an illustrious career. When his club, FC Barcelona, played the UCL final against Arsenal in 2006, the player, who was just eighteen then, was stricken with a hamstring injury.

The injury prevented him from even making the bench for the club. While he had played a stupendous tournament throughout, breaking into the first team, his involvement would have etched his name further into history books. Barcelona went on to win the game without Messi 2-1, making a stunning comeback.

While talking to TNT Sports in 2021, Messi stated, “At least I would have liked to be on the bench that night. Until my injury [against Chelsea in the round of 16], I participated in every Champions League game in my career. I was disappointed. I deeply regret that episode. We won that Champions League and I was unsure what would happen again because it is a difficult competition.”

He was rested due to a minor injury. Irrespective of this he remained on the bench to increase the morale of the squad and showcase his stature as an ‘absolute leader.’

His compatriot Rodrigo de Paul continued to praise his unconditional love for the National team. He noted that he could have missed since it was not an extremely crucial match. Even the goalkeeper Martinez expressed his praise for Messi’s commitment calling him the nation’s pride, and resonating the loyalty of every fan through his presence.

The defending champions of the World Cup enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory over their rivals, maintaining a perfect record in their qualifying campaign.
