Popular football website, B/R Football, received widespread backlash after one of its ‘X’ posts showed Argentinean captain and 2022 World Cup winner, Lionel Messi, standing on top of the Corcovado mountain in Brazil, in a position that replicates the original statue of Christ the Redeemer, that currently stands atop the mountain.
The post that was shared by B/R Football’s official ‘X’ handle, received mixed reactions from a wide range of football fans, with some criticizing the photo for insulting religious views and hurting religious sentiments of Christians all over the world, while others showing support for Messi’s recent upsurge after he won the 2022 FIFA World Cup, celebrating Argentina’s recent WC qualifier win against Brazil at the Maracana stadium in Rio. An ‘X’ user called it a ‘mockery’ of Christian sculptures and Gods.
The post referred to the violence torn match between Argentina and Brazil, which resulted in a win for the visiting side through a Nicolas Otamendi header in the second half of the match. The picture shows Messi in the same posture as the Christ statue, with his hands spread in opposite directions, carrying the World Cup in one hand.

Although many of its other posts may have received a lot of praise, the recent post left a certain section of football fans fuming at the creators.

Fans reacted to the post after B/R football posted the cartoon, with the following caption – The World Champions (Argentina) go to Brazil and get out with a massive win. Some Twitter users seemed disgusted at the post, due to its reference to the famous statue, disrespecting Christianity.
