Football icon Lionel Messi, who won the 2022 World Cup, is gearing up for an emotional reunion with his childhood team, Newell’s Old Boys. The pre-season match with Inter Miami is scheduled for February 15 at Florida’s DRV Stadium before the 2024 MLS season kicks off.

Messi, now playing in the MLS with Beckham’s Miami, is enjoying the later years of his career. Having started his journey with Newell’s Old Boys in Rosario, Argentina, he later moved to FC Barcelona at the age of 13. This upcoming game marks his first time playing against the club where he began his football journey. Reports indicate Messi scored 234 goals in Newell’s distinctive red and black kit.

The upcoming match between Inter Miami and Newell’s Old Boys will also reunite club manager, Gerard Martino, with his revered roots at the Rosario-based team. Martino holds the record for making the highest number of appearances for Newell’s. Furthermore, he had a successful stint as a head coach of the club, winning a League title in 2013. Both Messi and Martino have achieved iconic status at the Argentinean club through their successful contributions.
