Lionel Messi has recently expressed his desire to play alongside a Ballon d’Or winning midfielder who got the better of him in the World Cup, Luka Modric. He has asked his superiors and Inter Miami to sign the Croatian maestro as he is in the last year of his contract at Real Madrid.
Modric has reportedly received offers from several clubs in Saudi Arabia and the United States. It seems like Messi does not want to miss the opportunity to play alongside another creative maestro, much like himself.
The duo met recently in Croatia to discuss the move, with David Beckham, the co-owner of Inter-Miami, also being present. This has sparked numerous controversies as Modric’s recent revelation of dissatisfaction with playing time at Real Madrid came to light via the media.
Inter Miami seems to be assembling a star-studded squad full of La Liga greats. Messi’s former teammates also followed him- Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets. Now, with the addition of another Ballon d’Or winner, the team will almost become invincible. However, Real Madrid is yet to express their stance on Luka Modric as they will also be looking to hold onto their player.
Stats show that Inter Miami needs Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi‘s transition to the US with Inter Miami has been spectacular. His repertoire of skills combined with just a flair of ‘Messi Magic’ is enough for his side to tumble any opposition. And the recent run of form of the Miami club, where Messi has not been present, is an example of that.
So far, the ‘little boy from Rosario’ has a total of 11 goals and 5 assists in 12 games for Inter Miami across all competitions. This is according to Transfermarkt. However, the point being that he last featured for David Beckham‘s Miami side in the clash against Toronto. The home team won that game 4-0, but Messi was substituted after just 37 minutes due to a suspected injury.
Since then, Inter Miami has been Messi-less and it is showing in their results. 3 games, 1 draw and 2 losses. Further, to worsen the pain, Futbol Americas has released a stat where they have showcased how bad Inter Miami looks without the presence of the Argentine. The stat shows that the Miami-based team has a record of 8 wins and 6 draws with Messi. Whereas, 9 wins, 5 draws, and 16 losses without him.
A hope is all there is left for Inter Miami and the fans. However, Lionel Messi’s return looks highly unlikely in the coming days, only increasing the everlasting pain of the club.
