Lionel Messi won’t consider returning to Barcelona as long as Gerard Pique is still at Camp Nou: Reports

Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique

According to El Nacional, Lionel Messi will not return to FC Barcelona while the veteran Spanish defender Gerard Pique is still a member of the team. After participating in the sport for 17 seasons to develop his legendary position, Lionel Messi left Barcelona last summer.

Undoubtedly, Lionel Messi was among the best players to ever represent the Catalan giants. Messi had an incredible record of 672 goals in 778 appearances while at the club, helping them win multiple championships. Many people consider him to be the best football player that has ever lived.

Messi, though struggled to get going at PSG, with just seven goals and 11 assists over 23 games across all competitions. In 16 Ligue 1 appearances, he has only scored twice, a dismal performance for a player of his potential and ability. There have been whispers that he would join the Catalan giants again. Numerous regional media sources claim that Messi is dissatisfied with how the French media portrays him. He feels that given his contribution to the squad, the criticism is unfair and not warranted.

Since moving to the French city, the Argentine star Lionel Messi has visited Spain frequently. Messi’s probable return to his old team will now depend on Pique’s absence from Barcelona, though. The seasoned defender’s actions, which appear to have caused his departure, set off Lionel Messi.

The Argentine legend discovered that Pique had informed Joan Laporta, president of Barcelona, that Messi’s departure would enhance the team’s financial situation. According to reports, the Argentine is upset that the Spaniard told Laporta such a thing because the two had been close friends since they were 13 years old.

During the birthday festivities for Messi’s wife Antonella Roccuzzo, evidence of the Argentinean’s animosity toward Pique was prominent. Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Cesc Fabregas, all former Barca teammates, were in attendance. Pique and his wife Shakira were not visible, though. They have previously regularly attended such gatherings.
