Lionel Messi’s Argentina dethrones Brazil at top of FIFA rankings after World Cup win

World Cup winner Argentina topped the latest FIFA rankings for the first time in six years. They take over from Brazil, which was previously in the top spot. The two are the only South American teams in the top ten.

Argentina’s two wins in friendlies last month ended Brazil’s one-year reign at the top, which fell to third after losing 2-1 to Morocco. France, the World Cup runner-up, jumped to No. 2 after beating the sixth-ranked Netherlands and No. 49 Ireland in European Championship qualifying. Belgium remained at No. 4, with England following after two wins, including a victory over No. 8 Italy.

Europe completed the top 10 with No. 7 Croatia, followed by Italy, Portugal and Spain. All four remained in their previous spots, despite results like Spain’s 2-0 loss to Scotland and Croatia’s 1-1 draw versus Wales. The countries will be back in action in the middle of June, with European qualifying matches and games in the Nations League.

The FIFA Men’s World Ranking is a system of ranking men’s national football teams. FIFA is the world governing organisation of football. It ranks its men’s national teams based on game results, with the highest-ranked teams at the top. Nations such as Argentina complained that the previous approach failed to reflect the national teams’ relative strengths accurately. As a result, the FIFA ranking system has undergone numerous changes over the years.

After extensive testing and analysis, the FIFA Council approved a new model for determining the FIFA World Ranking, which went into effect in August 2018. FIFA developed a new version of the World Ranking known as “SUM.” It is based on adding/subtracting points won or lost in a game/from prior point totals. The previous version averaged game points over a specified period.

The FIFA World Ranking compares the 211 clubs that comprise the FIFA organisation. The number of games won by a club and how “significant” those victories were, such as in big tournaments or against tough opponents, are among the criteria used to determine the FIFA ranking. Thus, it is no surprise that Argentina are top of the rankings after their emphatic World Cup victory.
