In a show of solidarity, the England women’s national team has openly stood by Jenni Hermoso amidst the unfolding controversy surrounding Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The team condemned the RFEF as a “sexist and patriarchal organization.”

Jennifer Hermoso stated that she“did not enjoy it” and called for consequences for the president’s actions. The Lionesses have voiced their solidarity with Jenni Hermoso and the entire Spanish team, asserting that abuse is unequivocally intolerable and the truth evident. Their statement underscores that individuals believing in their invulnerability should not be exempt from consequences, and any form of harassment demands swift action.

Although widely anticipated to resign during an extraordinary general assembly orchestrated by the RFEF, Luis Rubiales stirred up controversy by bucking expectations and refraining from stepping down. Rather than acknowledging fault, he positioned himself as a victim, using terms like “social assassination” and “false feminism.”

Despite allegations and protests, Rubiales worsened the situation by giving a new contract to coach Jorge Vilda. Football figures, clubs, and politicians disapproved. In response, 81 women players, including Hermoso, signed a statement, boycotting matches until Rubiales is removed.

A significant controversy emerged despite Spain’s victory in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. During the final’s post-match ceremony, Spanish federation chief Luis Rubiales kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the lips onstage.

Rubiales faced substantial criticism, which he vehemently denied, asserting that the act was consensual. Unlike Rubiales’ assertion, Hermoso clarified that she did not give any consent and felt uncomfortable with the act. Following this FIFA has taken action against Rubiales from all football-related activities for a duration of three months, initially, which is subject to increase further after a thorough investigation.

FIFA issued an official statement announcing the provisional suspension of Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at both national and international levels. Jorge Ivan Palacio, the head of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee from Colombia, chose to exercise the power vested in him by Article 51 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).
