Lisandro Martìnez has been out of action for Manchester United ever since he picked up a knee injury against West Ham United earlier in February. The player has been sidelined ever since, and made just one appearance as a substitute against Brentford in a 1-1 draw earlier this week. While many were counting the days for his much-awaited return, news has surfaced regarding yet another injury.
It is now understood that his return has been delayed further following an injury he suffered during training. As per Fabrizio Romano, the player has suffered a calf strain and will now miss atleast a month more. This means bad news for United, as they will be without the centre-back to face Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United. His injury only adds to United’s long list of absentees, which includes Victor Lindelof as well.
This leaves Erik ten Hag no other option but to start Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane in defense. Even though Varane was also subbed off against Brentford, he later clarified that it was only precautionary.
As United remain firmly seated at sixth, it is unclear whether Ten Hag will call up Jonny Evans to fill in for the injured backline. The 36-year-old was not a part of the squad to face Brentford and report stated that he was carrying an injury.
Fans react to Lisandro Martinez picking up an injury yet again
Lisandro Martinez has been a crucial element of Manchester United‘s backline. The Argentine centre-back has been a regular starter under Ten Hag and his injury has made the club make some unforeseen changes to their backline. A fan commented that Martinez’s misfortunes began ever since he was dribbled past by Mohamed Salah.
Another said that this season was officially over for Manchester United. A fan called him Eric Bailly 2.0, pointing to his injury-prone nature.
Liverpool fans mocked the player, saying that he was faking an injury not to play Liverpool. United fans wished him a speedy recovery while they prayed for his injury to not be serious. It is no secret that Ten Hag has had to work his way around multiple injuries throughout the season.
Some said that United’s season was cursed and that they should just try again next season. However, some United fans were unfazed at the fact that they face Chelsea in their next game.
Another confident fan said that the Red Devils will put four goals past Chelsea. As United get ready to face Liverpool, Chelsea, and Newcastle, fans are hoping fingers crossed that the club manage to pull off positive results.
