John Oliver is a celebrated British comedian who has his show called Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. It garners great reviews and is watched worldwide for Oliver’s great humor and satire. Oliver is from England, where many people are fanatics of Football. Just like his countrymen, Oliver loves football and is a Liverpool fan thanks to his parents.
Recently, his show won the ‘Best Scripted Variety Show’ at the 2024 Primetime Emmys. As he walked on stage, he began thanking his colleagues, families, lawyers, and children. He then began on how disappointed his children were he was leaving but promised them Pokemon cards.
He then joked about how he was not going to leave until he got “played off” by the mother of the host, Anthony Anderson. As he waited for himself to get “played off,” he started naming the players of Liverpool before Anderson’s mother jokingly shouted out. He named three players, Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk.

John Oliver is a huge Liverpool fan through his parents. Born and raised in Birmingham, it was his parents, who were from Merseyside, who made him follow the club. Oliver calls the 2005 Champions League Triumph as a happy moment. He watched the match at home and his father phoned him in tears, adding how it was a moment they forever had to remember. In the sitcom Community, he plays Prof. Ian Duncan who is a huge Liverpool fan as well.

Many fans on Twitter were impressed by his knowledge of the game. More so, since they did not know that he is a huge football fan and follows the game religiously. Fans agreed with Oliver when he said he could name the entire Liverpool playing 11, with one adding he could name the entire squad.
