Liverpool and Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez has received a lot of criticism from fans and pundits alike for his ‘questionable’ finishing and ‘poor’ decision-making in front of goal. The #9 however, has been racking in goals consistently for the Reds with his most recent game for Liverpool featuring a brace by the player. With 7 goals and six assists in the Premier League this season, Nunez owns a unique record that has surprised several fans on social media.
Liverpool’s rivalry with Arsenal is no secret. The Gunners have failed time and again to earn a victory at Anfield to no avail. While opposition fans troll Nunez for his ‘poor’ finishing and control, a shocking stat has silenced his critics. Under a Twitter thread featuring football stats that ‘sound fake but are true’, a fan’s comment has taken the entire fan base by surprise.
As per Darwin Núñez’s record in front of goal, the Uruguayan has scored 25 goals in all competitions since his arrival. However, what truly surprised fans was that his record surpasses that of Arsenal players like Gabriel Jesus (18), Gabriel Martinelli (21) and star man Bukayo Saka (24).
Liverpool paid £85 million for their #9, who happens to have 20 goal contributions under his belt in all competitions this season.
Fans echo praise for ‘disrespected’ star Darwin Nunez
Darwin Nunez’s name has been equated to that of misses and poor showings in front of goal. The Liverpool #9 entered his second season at the club after enduring a ‘less than succesful’ debut year at the club. His 9 goals and 3 assists were no match for Erling Haaland‘s record breaking 2022/23 season, as many Liverpool fans drew comparisons between the two during the start of last season.
Nunez has redeemed himself this year, as crucial goals from his pocket have helped Liverpool scrape past multiple opponents in recent times. A fan did not hide his shock, claiming that he still believed Nunez was bad till he looked at his numbers. Many Liverpool fans admitted that this will be a difficult conversation for opposition fans.
On the other hand, opposition fans did not seem to take much notice of this statistic. They argued that a €100 million player is expected to put up such numbers and that his 25 goals are below what is expected from someone of his quality. Liverpool supporters hit back with claims that Saka is overrated and is unnecessarily hyped up by Arsenal supporters.
Meanwhile, Liverpool take on Fulham in the semi-final of the EFL Cup on Thursday and the club will expect goals from their #9.
