Liverpool’s summer target expresses desire to play for the Reds in the Champions League in future

Joao Gomes, a transfer target for Liverpool who are currently dealing with a midfield injury crisis, has decided to stay with Flamengo for the foreseeable future. Gomes was a target for English clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United, and Chelsea, but he recently signed a contract extension with Flamengo that will keep him there through 2027.

Since their team has been hampered by injuries in recent weeks, with several players out indefinitely, Liverpool has been searching for a new midfielder. On the final day of the summer transfer window, they acquired Arthur from Juventus on loan, but they are still in need of extra reinforcements—ideally, something more long-term—if they want to contend for the top spots.

Liverpool's Joao Gomes

Gomes is known for his exceptional ball-winning skills, but he is also a skilled dribbler with the ability to move the ball higher up the field, making the Reds’ attacking style of play effective. He can advance the ball with his range of passing because he is a good passer, which makes him more appropriate for this Liverpool team.

Gomes has recently expressed his desire to play for Liverpool in the Champions League

Gomes has been prompting the transfer. When asked on Instagram who he’d like to play for, he replied enthusiastically about a move to the Reds. “Liverpool are a team I’d play for,” Gomes said. “I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”

Gomes’ previous contract, which was due to expire in 2025, has been extended by a further two years, but given that he is still only 21, he won’t be available for a low price. It won’t be simple to sign the Brazilian, and Liverpool will need to act swiftly if they are to secure their man given that other clubs in England are also interested in him.
